Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What do I need to do before I can start driving?

You will need to study the road code and pass your Learners Licence test.

Q. How much are lessons with a Qualified Instructor?

With ABC Driving School you pay $50.00 in Kaiapoi, Rangiora or Woodend or $60.00 in town.

Q. How often should I have my lessons?

It is best to have at least one lesson a week.

Q. How many driving lessons will I need to take?

This differs from person to person depending on previous experience and if the vehicle is automatic or manual.

Q. Do you do intensive courses?

We can book you in as much as you like in a week, providing the times are still free. This will determine how quick you will be able to sit your license test.

Q. Do I need to pass the Theory Test before I can start my driving lessons?

Yes, you need to sit your Theory Test and obtain your Learner Licence before you start driving a car.

Q. I already have my learners or restricted licence. Does the age-change affect me?

Yes, When you have your learners licence and are not yet 16 years and 6 month old, you will have to apply for an exemption, what you can do when you turn 16. If you already have a restricted, but are not 18 yet (or 171/2 when you do a Defensive Driving Course), You will also have to apply for an exemption. An exemption will be granted if you have not had a traffic infringement.

Q. How do I apply for an exemption?

To apply for an exemption, you will have to ring the NZTA (088 822 422)and ask for a form. This costs $27.20. After you have returned this form, it will be processed (e.g., checked for traffic-offences), what will take approximately 3 weeks. When it is approved you will receive the exemption. You can now book your test.

Q. What should I study to pass the Theory Test?

You should study the New Zealand Road Code.

You can go to our page "practice test" to see how well you could do. (note: questions will be random, so you might like to do more than one practice test)

Q. Where do I take my Theory Test?

You will take the Theory Test at an approved LTSA Driver Licensing Agent.

Q. Now that there is a Theory Test, will I still be asked questions at the end of my Practical Test?

No. You will not be asked any questions when you sit the test for your Restricted Licence.

Q. Can a friend or relative teach me how to drive?

Legally they are aloud to teach you as long as they have had their full Licence for a minimum of two years. However many drivers develop bad habits over the years, which might be passed on without realising it. It is easier for an instructor to teach good habits than it is to get rid of bad habits. ABC Driving School cars also have dual controls. And don't forget, we offer the guarantee that you will pass first time (cond. apply)!

Q. Will my instructor expect me to know the basics of learning to drive?

It is not necessary to know anything about how to drive a car.

Q. Do you provide tuition in Automatic Cars?

Yes we have dual-controlled automatic cars.

Q. Do you provide tuition for people with disabilities?

Yes we have a patient instructor, and a special modified car, which can be set up to accommodate any need. We are ACC accredited.

We can also advise and help you to get any modifications that your own vehicle may require.

Q. Do you provide Refresher Courses for Qualified Drivers?

We can help with upgrading from automatic to manual, overseas conversions,  teach you how to parallel park again or any other aspect of driving you need more confidence in.

Q. Do you provide motorbike training?

At present we do not have any motorbike training courses.
